Seamlessly weaving documentary and fictional footage, internationally acclaimed Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda has given us a remarkable synthesis of art and history in the making. The subject is the Polish Solidarity strike at the Gdansk shipyard in the summer of 1980. The impact is unforgettable. Wajda tells his story through the eyes of a alcoholic TV journalist (Marian Opania) who's ordered to smear one of Solidarity's key figures (Jerzy Radziwilowicz), the "Man of Iron." His investigation results in a series of flashbacks, including some rare footage of the abortive 1968 and 1970 strike attempts, that give us a fascinating and heartfelt picture of their turbulent period of Poland's history. Adding to the film's credibility is the appearance of Lech Walesa in both the documentary and fictional portions of the film.
